Commemoration events programme
Friday, 25 July 2025

Emeritus Professor Anthony McElligott's recently published and internationally acclaimed book,  The Last Transport: The Holocaust in the Eastern Aegean was presented  in Rhodes on Sunday 20th July at a public event in the evening chaired by the Curator of the Jewish Museum, Dr Dimitrios Varvaritis, as part of this year's annual commemoration of the deportation of the Jews of the islands of Rhodes and Kos. The event was held in the stone and pebbled courtyard of the 16th Century synagogue (the oldest functioning synagogue in Greece).

The 30-minute talk was followed by a further 30 minutes of Q&A from the audience, among whom were the descendants of survivors and emigres from the two islands. The Deputy Head of Mission of the German Embassy in Athens Frau Charlotte Schwarzer was also in attendance, as too were a number of local, national and international dignitaries. A reception and book signing also took place.

Professor McElligott's book will feature at this year's Dublin Festival of History (Sunday 28th September) when he will be discussing the book and its nomination for the prestigious Yad Vashem International Book Prize for Holocaust Research with Professor Robert Gerwarth (UCD).
