The event was a resounding success, featuring engaging presentations on the history of German Studies by academics from Ireland, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, and the Czech Republic. These contributions offered both in-depth analyses of specific topics and broader perspectives on the historical development and current challenges facing the discipline in each country. Topics ranged from medieval literature and comparative studies to contemporary issues in the field.
As is tradition at Movens conferences, the programme included one-to-one Masterclasses for PhD students, led by experienced international scholars in German Studies. These sessions once again proved to be an invaluable opportunity for graduate students to expand their academic networks, gain fresh insights, and learn from leading voices in the field.
The conference began on June 5th with a pre-programme that included a campus walk and a guided tour of the University’s impressive Irish-German book collections. It concluded with a late-afternoon exploration of Irish-German cultural and historical connections and a visit to the nearby twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina (which were impacted by the Ardnacrusha hydro-electric power station, for which building commenced 100 years ago, which will explored at our next big event on 4 July).
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all contributors for their excellent papers and lively discussions, and to the DAAD for their generous support through the 2025–2027 PGS programme.
