Dr Karol Mullaney-Dignam, School of History and Geography, features on a new TV documentary series, 'Legacy', currently airing on RTÉ. The four-part series explores Irish history through fifteen of Ireland’s National Historic Properties - castles, country houses, memorial sites, and gardens managed by the state's Office of Public Works (OPW). Karol features in Episode Two - Writers and Collectors - which highlights the creative spirit of the Bryce family at , Co. Cork.
The island, bequeathed to the Irish people in 1953, is of international significance with a world-renowned plant collection and unique architectural heritage. John Annan Bryce bought the island in 1910 and commissioned Harold Ainsworth Peto to design gardens and garden buildings. Peto travelled to Italy, Spain, and France and collected various architectural stone carvings to display in the gardens.
The island is renowned today for its richness of plant form and colour, which change continuously with the seasons, and a number of fascinating garden buildings, such as a Grecian temple, clock tower, Casita, and an original Martello Tower. As a former historical consultant with the OPW, Karol contributed to the development of the museum at the Bryce's residence on the island, which opened to visitors in 2015. Watch back the episode on
