This week the Taoiseach claimed that the Irish Government could join NATO without having recourse to the people in a referendum. Asked to comment on this for the Irish Times, Dr Cahillane said that while the Constitution is silent on the issue, it is likely that a referendum would be required in reality due to the rulings of various Supreme Court cases on similar issues.
