D2iCE Research Centre Launched at UL: Minister Lawless Visits as AI and Ethics Take Centre Stage
The 黑料社 marked a significant milestone in AI and data-driven innovation with the official launch of the Data-Driven Computer Engineering on Thursday, 28 May, The event was organised and hosted by Kemmy Business School鈥檚 Associate Professor Mairtin Cunneen who leads the AI Governance and Ethics pillar of D2iCE.
D2iCE brings together more than 40 researchers across multiple UL faculties, uniting expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, AI Governance, and immersive technologies. The Centre is focused on generating real-world impact through ethical, sustainable, and interdisciplinary AI research.
The Kemmy Business School was host to multiple events showcasing some of the D2iCE centre鈥檚 fantastic Research. With live research panels, poster presentations and immersive virtual reality demonstrations.
The event was attended by Minister James Lawless TD, Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence, who met with researchers and experienced first-hand some of the cutting-edge work being developed at UL alongside Professor Pepijn van de Ven, Dr. Ciaran Eising, Professor Kevin Ryan and Professor Mairt铆n Cunneen who chaired the event.

Speaking at the launch, Professor Cunneen highlighted the collaborative mission of D2iCE:鈥淭he Centre reflects the growing need for cross-disciplinary research that embeds ethical AI into the core of technological innovation. D2iCE is not just about advancing AI鈥攊t鈥檚 about ensuring its responsible and inclusive use.鈥
Since its establishment, the Centre has generated almost 鈧4 million in research income, positioning it as a national leader in responsible AI research. D2iCE researchers are currently working on projects across health, transport, sustainability, data governance, and smart cities.

The launch also featured an immersive experience of the Kemmy Business Schools UL XTREME Living Lab, led by Professor Cunneen, offering guests a creative and experiential perspective on how AI can support social good. Funded by Science Foundation Ireland, XTREME combines technology, culture, and community in the exploration of ethical AI futures.
D2iCE is set to become a cornerstone of UL鈥檚 strategic vision for data-driven innovation, building strong collaborations across academia, industry, and government.
