Apply to SUSI for a grant
Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI ) is the single national Awarding Authority for all new student grant applications. Applications for Student Grants are assessed under the criteria set out in the Student Support Act 2011, Student Support Regulations and the Student Grant Scheme.
Applications are made online and are subject to supporting documentation. The SUSI website is a comprehensive source of information on the student grant scheme and provides a handy step-by-step guide to eligibility and the grant process.
Receiving SUSI payments:
You must be registered as a UL student for SUSI to make payments:
- Payment of any maintenance grant awarded to you can commence after UL has confirmed to SUSI that you are registered and in full-time attendance on your course.
- Payment of any fee grant awarded to you is made directly to UL by SUSI on your behalf based on your confirmed registration and attendance.
- Please ensure that personal details submitted to SUSI correspond with details submitted to UL e.g.: if you use your name in Irish, ensure this version is used with both organisations.
Confirming Your UL Registration:
- You do not need to submit proof of your registration to SUSI yourself, as SUSI connects directly with UL on a weekly basis, to confirm that grant applicants are registered UL students.
- Please ensure you complete your student tasks (For example, Annual Registration, Confirmation of Attendance) on time at the start of each semester. We will advise you of the deadline via your student email address each semester.
What does a SUSI student grant cover?
Please note that SUSI does not cover the Student Levy of €102 and all students are liable for this amount.
Student grants provide financial support to eligible students. There are 2 elements to the student grant - a maintenance grant and a fee grant. A maintenance grant is a contribution towards your living costs. A fee grant can cover:
- All or part of your tuition fees
- All or part of the student contribution
- Costs of essential field trips
