Thursday, 31 July 2025

As part of UL Research Week in April, we were honoured to welcome back Professor , originally from Limerick and now based at Duke University, as a keynote speaker at our LDCRC Breast Cancer Research event.

In this powerful video, Prof. McDonald shares his journey from his early research days at the (previously known as NIHE) to leading cancer biology research in the U.S., emphasising the critical role of basic science in discovering and developing future cancer treatments and cures.

🔬 “95% of all drugs used in Europe and the U.S. had their origins in basic research laboratories.”

💡 “We need to show young investigators just how rewarding a career in science can be.”

🎯 “We want to move the conversation from treatment to cure.”

His message is clear: investing in research changes lives, and it starts at the bench.
