In this paper, I will examine Egertons short fiction and consider the cross-lines between her work and that of George Moore and James Joyce. Beginning with a brief examination of the connections between Egertons transcultural experience and literary experiments, and those of her Scandinavian role models (particularly Knut Hamsun and Ola Hansson, whose texts she translated), the paper will address her deployment of their avant garde forms and narratives. With this in mind, examining the themes of subversion and sexual transgression which dominated her decadent narratives, I will consider her use of her Irishness, her outsider status, as a subversive tool to disrupt the operations of gender and genre at the end of the nineteenth century. Set in this broader context, and addressing a wider European audience at the end of the nineteenth century, Egertons work refutes the prevailing view of Irish fiction as always at odds with either British or European literary practice. Re-placing Egertons work alongside that of Moore and Joyce and focusing on linkages and echoes in the work of these three Irish writers, I will argue that we arrive at a somewhat more nuanced and differentiated account of the Irish fin de sicle than has tended to be offered in mainstream literary history. $DPQstu Y w {{jYHYH h~hpOJQJaJmH sH h~h@nOJQJaJmH sH h~hB9OJQJaJmH sH h~hB9OJQJh~hYNOJQJh~hwOJQJ#h~hB96OJQJaJmH sH #h~hw6OJQJaJmH sH h~hwOJQJaJmH sH h~h2++OJQJh~h2++5OJQJh~h'QOJQJh~h'Q5OJQJDtu o 7$8$H$`gdp 7$8$H$gdw 7$8$H$gdB9 2 @ c d e h k & ) = E F J x L : D [ ޚޚwwff h~h'QOJQJaJmH sH h~hBOJQJaJmH sH #h~hYN6OJQJaJmH sH h~h@nOJQJaJmH sH h~h~OJQJaJmH sH h~h=OJQJaJmH sH h~hpOJQJaJmH sH h~hB9OJQJaJmH sH h~hYNOJQJaJmH sH (#05mno޻ h~hYNOJQJaJmH sH h~h'QOJQJaJmH sH #h~h@n6OJQJaJmH sH h~h~OJQJaJmH sH h~h@nOJQJaJmH sH ,1h.
