The Role of Community Based Sheds in the Mid West of Ireland, a Qualitative Evaluation

As part of Research Week 2025 at the ºÚÁÏÉç (28 April – 2 May), Steven Byrne, Assistant Professor in School of Nursing and Midwifery, collaborated with Megan Vine, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Psychology, to present their research on the growing ‘Shed’ movement in Ireland.

These community-based organisations—commonly known as Men’s and Women’s Sheds—play a vital role in enhancing the health and wellbeing of their members. By fostering participation in enjoyable and meaningful activities, Sheds create inclusive spaces that support social connection, mental health, and community engagement.

The presentation was enriched by the presence of members from two local Women’s Sheds, who shared personal stories and insights. Their contributions highlighted the transformative impact of the Shed initiative—not only on individual lives but also on the broader communities they serve.
