Associate Professor Tadhg Kearney, Department of Chemical Sciences and Associate Professor Clodagh Toomey, School of Allied Health were the winners of the Early Career Research Consolidator Award and Starting Award respectively in 2023.

Associate Professor Tadhg Kennedy
Tadhg Kennedy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Sciences and Bernal Institute. The central theme of Tadhg’s research revolves around nanostructured materials for high-performance batteries.
He began his career with some groundbreaking work involving germanium nanowire lithium-ion battery anodes, which exhibited a threefold capacity increase compared to conventional graphite-based anodes.
Since his independent career began in 2016, I’ve established a well-funded group, securing more than €5million in funding.
As part of the winner's prize, a Research Impact podcast is recorded.
Sustainable high-performance batteries enabling the fight against climate change outlines the development of a low-cost, high-performance sodium-ion smart battery system for residential energy storage. Listen to Tadhg discuss the importance of his research in the development of clean energy enabling the fight against climate change.

Clodagh Toomey
Clodagh Toomey is an Associate Professor in the School of Allied Health and Health Research Institute. Her research is focused on improving musculoskeletal and general health in chronic conditions and injured populations.
Despite being the world’s leading cause of pain, disability and healthcare expenditure, the prevention and management of musculoskeletal health, including conditions such as osteoarthritis, is globally underprioritised.
Given our ageing population and evident burden on our waitlists and healthcare system, research with impact is crucial.
Clodagh combines participatory methods and implementation science to ensure evidence-based knowledge is translated into healthcare system, policies and practice.
As part of the winner's prize, a Research Impact podcast is recorded.
Improving musculoskeletal and general health in chronic conditions and injured populations sees Clodagh discusses her research and her group’s implementation of the GLA:D [Good Life with Osteoarthritis Denmark] programme in Ireland with collaborators as well as patient's point of view.
