Climate adaptation is no longer discretionary; it is a fundamental necessity for sustainable development. In response to escalating threats ranging from extreme weather events to environmental degradation, the need to strengthen regional resilience has become increasingly urgent.

S3ADAPT addresses this challenge by integrating Smart Specialization Strategies (S3) with climate adaptation policies to support sustainable regional development across Europe. The project seeks to align innovation-driven regional strategies with the pressing need for climate resilience by developing a strategic framework that facilitates the adjustment of business models to emerging challenges, such as shifts in resource availability, while fostering innovation to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change. Through this approach, S3ADAPT aims to enhance regional awareness, preparedness, and responsiveness to extreme climate events.

By reinforcing the objectives of the EU Cohesion Policy, S3ADAPT promotes innovation, sustainability, and adaptability at the regional level. Through the targeted application of S3, the project supports the development of locally tailored, innovative solutions that build regional capacity, address climate-related risks, and stimulate sustainable growth. It creates synergies between existing climate adaptation initiatives and emerging S3-based approaches, unlocking cross-sectoral opportunities and enabling the deployment of effective, regionally tailored adaptation strategies.

The S3ADAPT consortium brings together partners from Poland, Spain, Ireland, Italy, and Lithuania, with discovery partners in Ukraine and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This transnational collaboration draws on expertise in policy design, innovation systems, and stakeholder engagement to accelerate the formulation and implementation of impactful climate adaptation strategies.

S3ADAPT is co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg Europe programme.
