The ºÚÁÏÉç marked a significant milestone in AI and data-driven innovation with the official launch of the Data-Driven Computer Engineering by UL Vice President Research & Innovation Professor Kevin Ryan on Thursday, 29 May. The event was organised and hosted by Kemmy Business School’s Associate Professor MairtÃn Cunneen who leads the AI Governance and Ethics pillar of D2iCE and Dr. Reenu Mohandas, postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering.
D2iCE, with its origins in the department of Electronic & Computer Engineering, brings together more than 40 researchers across multiple UL faculties, uniting expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Machine Vision, Natural Language Processing, Data Analytics, AI Governance, and immersive technologies. The Centre is focused on generating real-world impact through ethical, sustainable, and interdisciplinary AI research.
The event was attended by Minister James Lawless TD, Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence, who met with researchers and experienced first-hand some of the cutting-edge work being developed at UL.

Since its establishment, the Centre has generated almost €5 million in research income, positioning it as a national leader in responsible AI research. D2iCE researchers are currently working on projects across health, transport, sustainability, data governance, and smart cities.

D2iCE is set to become a cornerstone of UL’s strategic vision for data-driven innovation, building strong collaborations across academia, industry, and government.
