Inclusive Practice Case Studies

This collection of case studies showcases a range of inclusive practices implemented across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Each case highlights practical strategies to create more equitable, accessible, and supportive learning environments for diverse student populations.

From curriculum redesign to inclusive assessment methods and accessible learning materials, the case studies offer real-world examples and insights to inspire and guide others in embedding inclusive principles into their own teaching practice.

The case studies also emphasise the significant impact that small, consistent actions can have on building an inclusive learning environment.

Chris McInerney

This module introduced inclusion-oriented practices: a “Tell me about yourself” questionnaire, flexible assignment target dates, early outreach via Brightspace analytics, unlimited resubmissions with feedback, and hybrid attendance options to support diverse student needs and engagement.

Caitlin Neachtain

Peer contracts enhance group work by clarifying roles, promoting fairness, and preventing conflict. They boost efficiency, professionalism, and real-world relevance. Offering choice fosters autonomy, helping students align tasks with their strengths and develop key graduate attributes.

Maria Hickey

This case study features a problem-based learning activity on multilingualism and technology. Using human-centred design, students explored language challenges faced by an immigrant family, proposed tech solutions, and engaged in peer learning. The activity fostered real-world, inclusive, contextualized learning.

This case study explores using UDL to design inclusive Brightspace module sites for distance learners. Catherine Martin

This project involved teaching TESOL to fourth-year undergraduate students using a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Plus One Approach. Multiple Means of Representation included providing multimodal resources and captioned lecture recordings on the VLE. To support Multiple Means of Engagement, lectures featured group tasks and post-lecture reflective discussions on the VLE. For Multiple Means of Expression, students chose between a reflective essay or a pre-recorded PowerPoint for assessment.

Inclusive practice case studies by Professional Support Staff

A Disability Support Services (DSS) Brightspace page was created to reduce information overload. Using plain language, clear headings, and key resources, it improves access to vital support information. Multiple formats—slides, videos, transcripts—enhance accessibility, reduce stress, and improve communication with students.

The Digital Badge in Universal Design for Learning is a 25-hour course combining webinars, online content, and peer activities. In Spring 2024, I led UL’s local rollout and redesigned Brightspace content to enhance participant engagement.
