A researcher has been elected to a prestigious European academy.

Professor Lionel Briand, Director of Lero – the Research Ireland Research Centre for Software and Professor of Software Engineering in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS), was recently elected to the Academia Europaea.

Founded in 1988, on the initiative of the UK’s Royal Society and other National Academies in Europe, the Academia Europaea is a pan-European, not-for-profit association of leading scholars from across all academic disciplines.

With approximately 6,000 members worldwide, it is the only Academy with individual membership from the Council of Europe states and other nations across the globe.

Members are nominated and selected based on internationally recognised excellence in their field.

Professor Briand joins a distinguished group of just 51 members from Ireland, across all disciplines, and becomes only the second Irish-based academic elected in the Informatics section. The only other member in this field is Professor Mike Hinchey, also from UL, Lero, and CSIS.

Professor Briand is globally renowned for his contributions to software engineering research, particularly in the areas of trustworthy AI systems, software testing and verification, and requirements engineering. His work has had a significant academic and industrial impact, helping to shape the future of intelligent, high-reliability software systems.

“This is an outstanding and richly deserved recognition of Professor Briand’s leadership and contributions to the global research community,” said Professor Kenneth Stanton, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

“It also highlights the excellence of software research at Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software Research, and in UL more broadly.”

Election to the Academia Europaea is regarded as a major milestone in an academic’s career and a reflection of sustained scholarly achievement at the highest level.
