Brief Description
This module will explain the concepts behind the Lean tools and will examine the various elements involved in effectively using these tools to support the organisation's Lean transformation.
FUNDING

NOTE: Applicants may only apply for and receive one subsidised course per semester.

The module will cover the following areas:
- Introduction to Lean Management
- Value Stream Mapping
- Cellular Manufacturing
- Workplace Standardisation and Standard Work
- Pull Systems
- SMED and 5S
- Kaizen
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- Discuss the evolution of Lean
- Identify and explain the differences between Mass Production and Lean models
- Define the main elements and concepts of the Toyota Production System
- Identify how to perform VSM and develop implementation plans
- Describe the elements of Standard Work and identify the process and tools to develop and
- implement Standard Work
- Describe the importance and operating rules of Kanban systems, define their functions and explain how they work
- Define Load Levelling and describe the steps to implementing such a system
- Apply the techniques of Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED)
- Define how to successfully implement and sustain 5S
- Describe the requirements for successful cell design
- Differentiate between various cell design options
- Identify how to effectively plan Kaizen events
- Explain the importance of post-Kaizen activity to sustain improvements
- Understand the strategic role of process improvement in organisation success
Applicants must have a minimum second-class Level 8 honours degree (QQI NFQ or other internationally recognised equivalent) in a relevant or appropriate subject, or equivalent prior learning that is recognised by the University as meeting this requirement.
Entry requirements are established to ensure the learner can engage with the course material and assessments, at a level suitable to their needs, and the academic requirements of the module. By applying to this micro-credential, you are confirming that you have reviewed and understand any such requirements, and that you meet the eligibility criteria for admission.
Successful completion of this module does not automatically qualify you for entry into a further award. All programme applicants must meet the entry requirements listed if applying for a further award.
The fees for this programme are €1,250
HCI Micro-Credential Course Learner Subsidy - Candidates who satisfy the eligibility criteria can qualify for 50% funding subject to the availability of places.
