the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) and the Master of Science in Urban Design and Climate Resilience
Tuesday, 13 May 2025

ºÚÁÏÉç's School of Architecture and Product Design has announced the introduction of two advanced degree programmes: the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) and the Master of Science in Urban Design and Climate Resilience (MSc UDCR). Both programmes will commence in September 2025 and are designed to equip students with enhanced skills to address contemporary challenges in design, sustainability and climate resilience.

Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA)

The Master of Landscape Architecture is a two-year, full-time Level 9 degree that offers an intensive and dynamic curriculum.

Situated within the School of Architecture and Product Design, students will enjoy a studio-based teaching methodology. They will have the opportunity to engage with diverse landscapes, including Limerick city, its estuary, the Atlantic coast and surrounding countryside.

Evolving planning and environmental legislation, driven by climate change, population  growth and urbanisation has heightened the need to address complex landscape challenges, increasing demand for graduates in landscape architecture.

Professional accreditation from the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) is being sought for MLA.

Master of Science in Urban Design and Climate Resilience (MSc UDCR)

The MSc in Urban Design and Climate Resilience is a two-year, full-time Level 9 degree programme.  It prepares students for urban design roles in an era that is increasingly complex, and covers latest developments in town planning, sponge city principles, climate justice, sustainable travel and transport infrastructure and urban science. The programme structure also supports students to develop essential skills to navigate complex political, social and spatial challenges.

Students on this masters programme will also enjoy a studio-based teaching approach, and learn and research with experts in urbanism, architecture, landscape architecture, ecology, history, science and philosophy. The interdisciplinary studio environment is the ideal environment for students to explore and develop climate-resilient urban solutions.

Eligible candidates for both masters should be graduates of architecture, design, art, geography, environmental science, planning, ecology, civil engineering or similar undergraduate disciplines. Candidates should also show creative aptitude, skills and potential through the submission of a personal statement and a sample of their creative work.

Both programmes welcome applications from those who do not meet the qualification criteria but who possess significant professional experience. Their experience will be assessed under UL’s policy of recognition of prior learning (RPL).
